Absolutely! I too have tons of super small scraps, a giant Rubbermaid tub to be exact. These scales were the perfect size to use up even the smallest pieces. I didn't feel bad tossing the leftovers after this project.

The foam will rip before the glue let's go, so my only concern for daily use is the handle. I thought it might get stretched and warped. That's why I added the wood around the grip.

I got the paint at Hobby Lobby, but it's available elsewhere. I used Fireball, Bronze, and Shockwave colors.

Your son must be pretty cool if he appreciates a Don Quixote costume. I ordered the glue from Amazon and the EVA foam is 5mm thick. (See additional comment for puppy vomit pic)

Thanks for the suggestion. I had the traditional white lying around, but now that I've tried it out, different colors are definitely in my shopping list.

The orrery was definitly inspired by Ogra's in the original Dark Crystal. Good eye.
Absolutely! Emu eggs would be super cool to work with. Fortunately, I don't have any anthills in my yard, but we have a specific place we put dead animals in a far corner covered with an old fire pit domed lid. The bugs can get to them, but other animals can't. These bones were mostly just dirty when I picked them out of the pile.
View Instructable »Thanks! Most of the items were so small that sculpting figures felt like a pretty daunting task, and I was struggling to finish before the contest deadline already. The scale is also not very consistent. I think if I added figures it would be far more obvious.

That's awesome! Rattray is officially added to the list of places I must visit on my next European trip. Although, bringing bones back through customs might get complicated.

You need an even number or ropes that are no more than 2" apart. It depends on the width of the rope and your preference a bit. Larger ropes could be further apart and thinner ropes might benefit from being a bit closer together. Let me know if you have more questions and be sure to post an "I made it" comment when you're done so we can see how great they turned out!

View Instructable »Yes, it really is a perfect project in those respects. It's the same knot over and over, so once you get the hang of it, it's easy. In fact, the green chair was made almost two years after the red chair, and I didn't even have to look up how to do the knot again. I just had a sense memory of how to move my hands to create it.
